Council outlines fisheries reform ahead of the season

PNC's policy council has published a set of fisheries reforms designed to put more of the value of each catch back in the hands of the fishers who bring it ashore. The proposals follow direct consultation with fishing communities.

Chief among the recommendations is a guarantee of prompt payment, ending the long waits that strain household finances during the off-season.

The proposals

  • A transparent, published reference price updated through the season.
  • Faster, guaranteed payment after each landing.
  • More cold-storage capacity in the regional hubs.

The council said the reforms are practical, affordable and could begin before the main season opens.
